STURTEVANT

1924, Lakewood, USA - 2014, Paris

Turning the logic of Pop Art on its head, Sturtevant interfered in the writing of art history by spotting the works of artists before they achieved international recognition, thus demonstrating astonishing intuition. Preceding the appropriationist movement of the 1980s by fifteen years, his repetitions are not mere mimetic exercises or proto-appropriation, but the reinterpretation of a score played by men. His works investigate the field of art through the study of their manufacture, reception, circulation and canonization.

Blow Job
2006

A 3 camera video devised for movement and sounds to emphasize the vast space of pornography: its blatant subjectivity, it’s use and abuse, it’s reality and brutality, it’s beauty and distortions; its “funny-fun” and rabid sadness and sadism. The ever-present artificial and falsity hover and hang; sending it with one swipe to the higher power of simulacra.

STUPIDITY
2013

For a while pornography might have been considered, theorised and experienced as revolutionary, but now, diluted by commodification, it has to be faced not as sensual immersion but as senseless indetermination. Pornography is the world around us: the pounding of mindnumbing images masquerading as fun and the endless urging to join the consumer festivities. So when Sturtevant reworks an entire advertising video in the form of deftly composed wallpaper, it’s a killer.
