Transformer
II is the second groupshow curated by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh
Matadin. The
first one, "We set off in high spirits", named after a painting
by Richard Greene, opened at Matthew Marks Gallery in the summer of
2001. Like
the New York version,this show is titled after a photographic work
by Katharina Sieverding from 1973 included in the exhibition . The
choice of the pieces in the first show started out as a reflection
of the art that has been of an important influence in the developments
of Inez and Vinoodh's visual language regarding their artwork as well
as their work in the fashion world. In Transformer II the artists
chose to stay closer to home by choosing works from their circle of
friends between whom there is a cross contamination of influence and
inspiration. As an extention of this collaboration vital works are
included by artists that are heroes of this group
: Franz Gertsch, Richard Prince, Richard Avedon, Robert Crumb
and Katharina Sieverding. Although
all works in Transformer II have been chosen intuitively, the idea
of pairing works like one would do in a magazine serves to expose
their similarities and descrepancies in visual language as well as
contributing to the exhibition's structure and emphasizing collaborative
aspects . The
notion of shifting in and out of gender identity, where ideas of elegance
and strength are no longer divided between the sexes, but are equally
present in each work, that in the end refers to a transformation that leads to a heightened sense
of the human condition.
Transformer
II est la deuxième exposition collective organisée par
Inez van Lamsweerde et Vinoodh Matadin. La
première, intitulée "We set off in high sprits"
d'après une peinture de Richard Greene, s'est déroulée
à la galerie Matthew Marks à New York, pendant l'été
2001. Comme la version new yorkaise, cette exposition doit son titre
à une œuvre photographique de 1973 de Katharina Sieverding,
également présentée dans l'exposition. Le
choix des œuvres de la première exposition était
le reflet d'influences déterminantes
pour le développement du langage visuel d'Inez et Vinoodh,
tant dans leur travail artistique que dans leurs activités
au sein de l'univers de la mode. Pour Transformer II, les artistes
ont défini un cadre plus familial en choisissant des œuvres
créées par des amis proches, un cercle d'amis entre
lesquels les influences et inspirations vont et viennent constamment.
Dans le prolongement de ces collaborations, l'exposition inclut des
oeuvres séminales d'artistes admirés par le groupe :
Franz Gertsch, Richard Prince, Richard Avedon, Robert Crumb et Katharina
Sieverding. Bien
que chacune des oeuvres de Transformer II ait été choisie
intuitivement, l'idée d'apparier les œuvres comme on pourrait
le faire pour la mise en page d'un magazine met en relief les similarités
et divergences des langages visuels, et structure l'accrochage de
l'exposition tout en mettant l'accent sur le principe de collaboration.
L'idée
du mélange des genres, du déplacement des identités
sexuelles, quand l'élégance et la force ne sont plus
des attributs normatifs mais se trouvent co-exister au sein de chaque
œuvre, opère une transformation qui conduit à une
perception élevée de la condition humaine.
