DOUBLE OR NOTHING
KUNSTHALLE NÜRNBERG, GERMANY
JUNE 28 — OCTOBER 5, 2025
Mrzyk & Moriceau’s works open up a quirky parallel world for the viewer, teeming with sharply observed everyday absurdities, surreal creatures, and references to pop culture. The main motifs are usually people, animals, or a mixture of both. Inanimate objects suddenly come to life, and human body parts become independent characters. Motifs from our everyday visual world are removed from their original context and placed into a new framework of meaning. Within this surreal cosmos, both serious and less serious social issues are addressed, patterns of human behavior and the visual codes of specific social groups are explored, and hidden fantasies are made visible.
“We have always felt drawn to metamorphoses, juxtapositions, absurdity, surrealism, and secrets—but in a humorous way,” explains the artist duo. “We want to entertain people, with each drawing telling a unique and interesting story. That story is determined by the viewer.”
Double or Nothing is Mrzyk & Moriceau’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. It bears the title of a James Bond novel. “For each solo show, we use a James Bond title,” say Petra Mrzyk and Jean François Moriceau. “We like that refined, grandiose feeling. There is always a connection to love, death, or revenge.” Double or Nothing is the first part of the brand-new James Bond trilogy Double 0, in which a new generation of double-O agents takes the lead role.
The Kunsthalle Nürnberg presents a comprehensive exhibition of works conceived especially by Mrzyk & Moriceau for its eight top-lit galleries, featuring around 400 pieces. These include site-specific wall paintings, drawings, animated films, folding screens, ceramic objects, as well as a badminton court equipped with rackets and a net that visitors are invited to use.
