SMALL TALK
MUSEUM LUDWIG, COLOGNE, GERMANY
NOVEMBER 1, 2003 - JANUARY 11, 2004
The Ludwig Museum is jointly developing a Lily van der Stokker
exhibition together with the Siemens Arts Program. Since the
late 1980s she has been producing decorative wall paintings
emanating playful lightness. These consist of bright patches of
colour which incorporate diverse patterns and brief texts to form
something ornamental. Not only are twenty or so of her wall paintings being created in the Ludwig Museum’s DC Room. The show
also integrates works by such artists as John Armleder, John Bock,
John Currin, Nicole Eisenman, Laura Emrick, Isa Melsheimer,
Nada Sebestyen, and Erwin Wurm. These works demonstrate a
particular thematic or formal affinity with Lily van der Stokker’s
creations in that they are also concerned with questioning
women’s image and the private realm, and with scrutinizing
changed spheres of action. That means this is not a group exhibition in the traditional sense. The artist herself acts as host, un
waveringly relating very specific works to her own art.
